Preface of the Editors

The 27 EPS Conference on Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics was held in the Recreation and Cultural Center of the Hungarian Army (Stefánia Palace), Budapest, Hungary on June 12-16 2000. It was organised on behalf of the Plasma Physics Division of the European Physical Society by the KFKI-Research Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics (KFKI-RMKI). The 27 EPS Conference brought together plasma physicists from all over the world. By decision of the EPS Plasma Physics Board, the conference this year tried to represent all fields of plasma physics appropriately, which was also mirrored in the conference topics:

A Basic plasma physics
B Magnetic confinement
C Inertial confinement, laser plasmas, short pulse phenomena
D Low temperature plasmas
E Astrophysical and geophysical plasmas
F Plasma and magnetic confinement theory and modelling
G Plasma edge physics
H Plasma heating
I Plasma diagnostics
J Plasma application, processing, radiation generation, dusty plasmas

The scientific programme was the responsibility of the international Programme Committee appointed by the Board of the EPS Plasma Physics Division. Four ``Invited Review Lectures'', 26 ``Invited Topical Lectures'' and 540 contributed papers were selected by this Programme Committee. While most of the contributed papers were presented as posters, 27 of them were selected for oral presentation. The scientific programme also included a lecture by the winner of the newly instigated Hannes Alfvén Award and an evening session on the status of the ITER project (ITER-FEAT).

As in the past, the invited papers have been refereed by members of the international Programme Committee and will be published as a special issue of the journal Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. A copy of it will be sent to each registered participant.

As in the last two years, the contributed papers, are published without refereeing, as a Conference Proceedings CD-ROM in the series Europhysics Conference Abstracts of the EPS which will also be sent to all registered participants. This method of publication was made available by the ELISE conference submission program developed at the Centre de Recherches en Physique des Plasma (CRPP) at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). This program was installed and operated at KFKI-RMKI with the help of the authors B. Duval and Ch. Nieswand. Final editing and CD-ROM production was carried out by the Local Organising Committee using the submissions processed by ELISE.
